Overview of National Racial Equity Summit-August 18, 2024

  • Education Justice  Study Tour: Sustainable Community Schools -Visits to 3 Sustainable Community Schools (SCS).  Two elementary and 2 high schools. (Dyett High School, Drake and Cameron Elementary) We will launch at Dyett High School, the birthplace of SCS for an overview and 2 groups will participate in the tour.  One group will visit Dyett HS and Drake Elementary and the other will visit 2 schools TBA. The tour will educate participants on the history and philosophy behind SCS, six pillars of SCS, effective implementation and support systems. This model is an evidence-based instrument for equity and community-driven school improvement and a viable alternative to school closings and charter expansion.

  • Democratic Mayors meet with Grassroots Leaders  -We want to set up a late week meeting with Democratic Mayors to discuss implementing racial justice, equity centered policy in local cities, following Mayor Brandon Johnson’s model.  An example of this is that Chicago is America’s first major city to move away from “school choice” and make a commitment to becoming a “sustainable community school district.”
